Boutros Boutros-Ghali was an Egyptian politician and diplomat who served as the sixth Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1992 to 1996. He was the first African to hold this position. Prior to his appointment as secretary-general, Boutros-Ghali served as Egypt's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, as well as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
During his tenure as Secretary-General, Boutros-Ghali was involved in several major international events, including the Rwandan genocide and the first Gulf War. He also initiated reforms within the UN, including greater emphasis on conflict prevention and peacekeeping. However, his term was also marked by controversy, particularly over his handling of conflicts in Bosnia and Somalia.
After leaving the UN, Boutros-Ghali continued to be an active participant in international affairs, serving as Chair of the South Centre - an intergovernmental organization that promotes cooperation among developing countries - and as a member of several high-profile commissions and panels. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 93.
